At Phreno, our mission is to make sports safer through data, education, and awareness.
We believe that collecting and analyzing real-world impact data can help athletes, coaches, and researchers better understand head impacts and reduce the risk of concussions, without compromising user privacy, safety, or autonomy.
1. Commitment to Ethical Data Practices
Phreno is committed to conducting all research and data analysis responsibly and transparently.
We adhere to the ethical principles of:
Respect for Individuals, protecting user privacy and ensuring informed consent.
Beneficence, maximizing potential benefits of our research for athlete safety while minimizing risk.
Justice, ensuring that findings benefit athletes across all sports, genders, and backgrounds.
Whenever applicable, Phreno research protocols are reviewed by Institutional Review Boards (IRB) and follow all applicable U.S. federal research guidelines.
2. Data Privacy and Security
We recognize that the information collected by our devices and mobile app is sensitive.
To protect user data:
All personal information is encrypted in transit and at rest.
Only authorized Phreno team members can access identifiable data, and all access is logged.
Data used for research or analytics is de-identified or aggregated, meaning it cannot be linked to an individual.
Phreno never sells or shares personally identifiable information.
Our systems are designed to meet or exceed the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and related data-protection frameworks.
3. Responsible Data Use
Phreno uses collected data to:
Improve the accuracy and reliability of our impact-detection algorithms.
Support research into concussion risk, sports safety, and impact biomechanics.
Contribute to public knowledge through aggregated, anonymized insights.
All data sharing with external partners (such as universities, sports organizations, or research institutions) occurs under formal Data Use Agreements (DUAs) that require the continued protection of user privacy and compliance with ethical standards.
4. Transparency and User Control
Users always retain control over their personal information.
You may request deletion of your identifiable account data at any time by contacting admin@getphreno.com
Deleting personal data will not affect de-identified data already used in research or aggregated analytics, as those data cannot be linked back to you.
5. Our Ongoing Commitment
Phreno’s mission depends on trust.
We are committed to continuous improvement in how we handle, store, and study data, ensuring that our technology not only advances performance and awareness but also upholds the highest ethical standards in sports technology and human-subjects research.
