Summer 2025 Update

We hope you're having a great summer. We wanted to send you a full update on what we've been working on at Phreno, where things stand with your pre-order, and what's coming next.

Hardware Upgrades (April–July)


Over the past few months, we've focused heavily on improving our hardware. Production has now started for our next batch of 100 devices, and as soon as they are completed, we'll begin shipping.
Key hardware improvements include:
 • Battery upgraded from 40 mAh to 90 mAh (125% increase)
 • Faster charging enabled by upgraded resistors
 • Minor housing redesign to improve durability
 • New shape accommodates the larger battery and reduces risk of top-side cracking
 • All units manufactured 100% in the U.S.
 • Device weight remains just 20 grams

Firmware Improvements (In Progress)



We're currently working on firmware updates to:
 • Improve battery optimization
 • Enhance use of onboard memory
 • Allow the device to function without being connected to a phone or without cell service

iOS App Updates (Next Phase)



Once firmware development is complete, we’ll move to app enhancements:
 • Battery percentage will soon be visible in the iOS app
 • A firmware update (including Bluetooth tag support) will enable this feature

Phreno Algorithm v2.1.0 (Just Released)


This is the most significant update to our algorithm so far. It changes how rotational forces are calculated:
 • Previous version: focused on sustained spinning (missed sudden twisting)
 • New version: uses angular acceleration, capturing sudden changes that are critical for capturing sudden rotational movements

This brings us in line with current biomechanical standards and provides more accurate, actionable insights. The update will be applied to all devices before they ship.

Shipping Timeline


We will provide an exact shipping date as soon as production finishes. We originally planned to ship earlier designs in May, but I made the decision to hold off, the battery life, charging speed, and overall feature set weren't where they needed to be. I'm confident that what you'll receive now is far better than what we could have shipped then.

Clinical Study 

We intend to start an IRB-approved clinical study this fall to validate our data and contribute to meaningful neuroscience research around concussion risk.
